British Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned on Sunday that if Russia succeeds in taking over Ukraine, global results will be “absolutely catastrophic”.
Russia continues its relentless attacks on Ukraine that began in late February. On Sunday, Russian forces fired a rocket at Kyiv, its first attack on the capital in weeks. Some see the strikes as a show of defiance to Group of Seven leaders who met the same day to discuss efforts to curb and put pressure on the Kremlin.
Still, Johnson called on the West to continue supporting Ukraine as the war drags on. Allowing Russian success could set a dangerous precedent, he said.
“I would just tell people in the United States that this is something that America has historically done and must do, and that is to stand for peace, freedom and democracy,” Johnson told CNN’s State of the Union. “And if we allow Putin to get out and just annex, conquer significant parts of a free, independent, sovereign country, which he is willing to do … then the consequences for the world are absolutely catastrophic … we ‘re legitimize further acquisition from him by the violence of others. parts of the Soviet Union, “he said.
“You can see the consequences, the lessons to be learned. This is what is ultimately disastrous, not only for democracy and the independence of countries, but also for economic stability,” Johnson added.
The prime minister strongly supported Ukraine and visited Kyiv twice to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Johnson stressed that while Ukraine’s defense costs are high, it is certainly “a price worth paying for democracy and freedom”.
