There are several reasons why AirPods Max are considered some of them the best headphones eye. But there are also many ways we think Apple cans could improve for AirPods Max 2 or try the next generation of in-ear headphones.
We’ve been testing AirPods Max since the first headset launch in December 2020. Both at the time of our first Apple AirPods Max Review and now, more than a year after using them, there are things we would like in the future of Max AirPods.
There have been very few rumors about AirPods Max 2, but if we had to guess, we will eventually see a refreshed pair of one of best noise canceling headphones we have ever worn. AirPods don’t follow the same release schedule as the iPhone, but it seems appropriate to update the headset in December 2022, two years after the initial version debuted. Still, it’s just speculation.
For now, we’ve made a list of what we hope the AirPods Max 2 will offer compared to the original AirPods Max:
1. New case
While we like the design of the AirPods Max, a particularly fun range of colors that blends well with the retro aesthetics of the headphones, there’s an obvious drawback – the case. The “Smart Case” offers very little protection for expensive headphones, leaving the headband fully exposed and susceptible to damage. And since AirPods Max are also not waterproof, the included case leaves openings in danger if a water bottle leaks or wet weather permeates your bag.
For now, the solution is to buy one of best cases and covers for AirPods Max. Several of the cases we tested are affordable, and even have Smart Case magnets, which force AirPods Max into low-power mode when stored.
2. Power button
AirPods Max have a huge oddity: unlike most of our devices, and even other Apple products, there are no power buttons. Excluding the power button is so weird and something we think about almost every time we use AirPods Max.
Although they are switching to low-power mode when idle for a few minutes or in a magnetic smart case, we still think Apple should provide a way to completely turn off AirPods Max. There’s no reason the Digital Crown button can’t be a power button either.
3. Better battery life
AirPods Max 20-hour battery life is nothing you can make fun of. 20 hours is enough for a trip to work, a working day or a plane flight. And as much as it’s worth it, the low-power mode does a decent job of keeping AirPods Max in good condition, even when not in use.
But some of the best wireless headphones have a longer battery life than AirPods Max. For example, Sony WH-1000XM5 can last up to 30 hours with ANC activated, making battery life a key difference between Sony WH-1000XM5 compared to AirPods Max. We’d like to see the next-generation Max AirPods last as long as the 1000XM5.
4. Greater support for audio formats
In terms of resolution and detail, AirPods Max feels like they’re achieving almost the pinnacle of what’s possible with Apple’s current wireless codec, AAC. But with other companies like Sony investing in new wireless codecs with higher speeds and higher bandwidth, it wouldn’t hurt for Apple to put on its engineering cap to bring something new to the scene.
For this purpose, what AirPods Max 2 will really need the most is a new codec, one that matches or exceeds the maximum transfer rate of 990 Kbps / 24-bit LDAC depth. Currently, AAC is limited to 264Kbps with 16-bit depth and 96kHz sampling rate. That’s CD quality, but not Hi-Res Audio.
If Apple really wants to sell them as be-all, end-all wireless headphones, they will have to show audiophiles to redouble their efforts for the most unusual audio performance possible.
5. Lower price
Another area where you want to see a little room to move is price. At launch, the Apple AirPods Max cost $ 549, making them a seriously expensive pair of wireless headphones.
For comparisson, Barefoot noise reduction 700 (the company’s leading wireless headphones) cost only $ 379, while Sony WH-1000XM4, the best noise canceling headphones of the year, cost only $ 349. Apple ears cost $ 200 more.
We certainly understand that Apple products have a superior look and design, but to many it seemed unreasonable to pay $ 200 more for a pair of wireless headphones. We don’t expect to see anything in the $ 300 range, but heck, even a $ 100 price reduction at launch could make the higher price of the headphones more comfortable.
