Brittney Griner’s preliminary hearing in Moscow scheduled for Monday: Lawyer – ABC News

A preliminary hearing for WNBA star Brittney Griner will be held in Moscow on Monday morning, her lawyer Alexander Boikov confirmed to ABC News.

Griner was detained on February 17 at Sheremetyevo International Airport in Russia after she was accused of carrying cannabis cartridges with hashish oil, which is illegal in Russia.

The U.S. State Department said Griner was “wrongly retained” by Russia, allowing the U.S. to negotiate her release.

Russia has extended her pre-trial detention several times, and last kept the 31-year-old in custody until July 2, ABC News reported. If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison.

“Our position has been very clear for some time. Brittney Griner should not be detained. She should not be detained for a single day longer,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said during a June 14 press briefing.

Griner’s wife Cherelle Griner told the Associated Press last week that she was “zero trust” in the U.S. government in resolving her wife’s custody.

“I find that unacceptable and I don’t trust our government at the moment,” she said, referring to a planned phone conversation between the two that never happened due to staffing problems at the U.S. embassy in Russia last week.

“If I can’t trust you to catch Saturday’s call outside of business hours, how can I trust you to actually negotiate on behalf of my wife to come home? Because it’s a much bigger request than Saturday’s call,” Cherelle Griner told the AP.

A State Department spokesman told ABC News that he regretted the incident and that it was caused by a “logistical error”.
