The BET Awards 2022, held Sunday at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, was full of surprises, from Janelle Monáe live, probably an unwritten F-bomb throw to jarking Memory segment who mentioned Roe’s “death” against Wade. But one of the most unexpected moments at the three-hour ceremony, near the end of the evening, was Kanye West’s return to the spotlight.
West has been quiet since April. He withdrew from the Coachella Festival that month without explanation and less than two weeks in advance, and was reportedly also banned from performing at the Grammy Awards for his harassing social media attacks on his ex-wife’s new boyfriend Kim Kardashian. Saturday night live star Pete Davidson. But the controversial hip-hop star was apparently still welcome at the BET Awards, where he appeared to pay tribute to his “brother,” lifetime achievement winner Sean “Diddy” Combs. While West’s entire face was shrouded in a black sock mask, mirrored shades, and a low baseball cap, there was no misconception about his identity — especially when he gave one of his typically long, vivid speeches.
West explained in his speech that he came out of hiding on Sunday precisely because he could not miss the opportunity to pay tribute to his longtime friend and role model. “I took a short break. I said, ‘I just want to declare myself legally dead for a year. I don’t miss anyone. I just want to be offline, ”he admitted, before adding that“ Puff [Daddy] he is quite persistent. … If Puff ever needs us, we have to jump in and be there. This man went through and survived a lot, broke down many doors so we could stand – I know for myself that I could be here today. ”
West’s speech for Diddy, which followed an epic all-star performance with Mary J. Blige, Nas, Lil ’Kim, Busta Rhymes, Faith Evans, Jodeci, Lox, Bryson Tiller, Maverick City Choir and Diddy himself, included many surprising sweet and sincere moments. West at one point emotionally thanked Combs, his “favorite artist,” for inspiring him, chirping, “There were so many hip-hop rules back then, and he broke them. … He broke many doors about classicism, taste, culture, ostentation. Puff, if I never told you, I love you. ”
However, the line in Ye’s speech that naturally attracted the most attention and attention on Twitter was the cheeky mention of his former Kardashian, from whom he divorced in February 2021. “I’m going to [Combs] for advice to date. He inspires so many of my choices, so many of my life choices. My woman elections, ”joked West. “And here we are. Thanks for that, Puff. ”
