Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made a direct appeal to Belarusian troops, who recently joined the war in support of Russia, telling them clearly that they will not live if they continue to fight Ukraine.

“First, all pilots, dispatchers, mechanics and other people who ensure the launch of missiles in Ukraine must understand: we will find you all,” said Zelenskyy during the address on Sunday evening.

Belarus is Ukraine’s northern neighbor.

“Each of you will be responsible for these strikes,” he added. And if someone thinks they will avoid responsibility by saying that was the order, you are mistaken.

The threatening words came like a Russian missile strike from Belarus hit a Ukrainian kindergarten and apartment building, killing a 37-year-old and injuring the man’s 7-year-old daughter and wife.

“When your rockets hit residential buildings, they are war crimes,” the Ukrainian president said. “The trial is what awaits you all. And you will have nowhere to hide – neither on the shores of the Caspian Sea, across which your rockets are launched, nor in Belarus … Nowhere.”

Zelenskyy said that Belarusians, however, do not have to die. He said that both Belarusian soldiers and civilians could choose life so as not to be “drawn into the war”.

Kyiv claims that Russia has lost about 35,000 troops since the first invasion of the country on February 24. This figure is more than twice the number of military fighters Russia lost during its nine-year war in Afghanistan.

Zelensky’s Sunday address came just hours before he joined G-7 leaders virtually during a summit in the Bavarian Alps. The group discussed the war in Ukraine, plans to adopt new sanctions against Moscow, and an infrastructure project to challenge China.
